How many of you still sport a coffee table in your living room? Out of all of you that said you do, how many of you use them for what they were traditionally designed for- serving coffee to friends and chit chatting in a neighborly or family visit. A place for yourself and guest to sit their coffee cups or other drink and share their day.
As time has gone on, the role of the coffee table changed to where it became a spot for the big coffee table picture books of exotic places, planes, trains, automobiles, etc to lay. It wasn’t there so much for anyone’s entertainment, - if you think back, not many really looked at the big coffee table books one would have on display and generally because coffee was no longer taken at the coffee table in the living room, but rather moved to the kitchen or dinning room table.
Then more time passes and the role of the coffee table evolved even more to where it became the table where the kids at their meal at while watching their favorite evening show, or the spot where the homework was spread out in order to try to sneak in the favorite show. If their was a drawer in the coffee table you can rest assured it was crammed stuff full of papers, junk mail and other odds and ends that at one point was on top of the coffee table.
More time passes and coffee tables started leaving living rooms. It was one less thing to dust and one less thing for a child to shove junk into the drawers or leave laying on it to pick up.
Now present day – the coffee table is making a come back as is the gathering in the living room to catch up with neighbors or family. Families are using them now as the hosting spot for the popcorn bowl as they gather for family movie night at home. As it goes in history, everything comes full circle to some degree or another. Although the use isn’t the original use that the coffee table was designed for, they are making a strong come back in home décor.

We always had a coffee table that sat in front of the couch when we were growing up. I don't believe I've ever had one since I moved out on my own. This one is okay but I really like the Mission style better.
ReplyDeleteI don't have a coffee table or end tables either. I'd like to have both. It just seemed easier when the kids were small to not have all of those sharp edges around. Now that they're all teens, I don't think I have to worry about that any more.
