Red Oak in Amish Furniture

A lot of Amish made furniture is made from Red Oak partially due to its easy accessibility and partially due to its hardness. Red Oak can be found throughout the U.S. and Canada. It is the most widely used hardwood tree. With trees having the ability to reach 100 feet tall making it very versatile in application. It is often plain sawn giving it a beautiful grain pattern.

When you think of Red Oak, you may think it only comes from one particular tree rightly named the Red Oak, however, Red Oak wood can be obtained from various trees. The black Oak is one of them. Identifying factors of Red Oak wood is its reddish grain pattern and the wide, flowing ring patterns. The annual rings are black in color and are indented into the wood. When you run your hand across the black rings, it will feel a bit ridged. You can identify Amish Plain sawn cuts by looking at the end grain pattern of any board.

  1. I've never found furniture that can compare with the beauty and craftsmanship of the Amish. I think the difference is the love of the trade that they grew up with. I wouldn't have any other type of furniture in my home.

  3. I love the rich look of furniture made with red oak. I have several pieces of Amish made furniture and they are by far my favorite pieces. As I replace older furniture, I look here first.

  4. I've always wanted an Armoire but really never had the room. We recently bought another home and we have a huge bedroom. My husband told me to go on and start looking and I think I've just found what I've been wanting for so long. I know it will last the rest of my life and then my daughter will be able to enjoy it.

  5. I've always felt that an armoire in the bedroom adds a sense of class to the room. This is very similar to the one I purchased. I love mine and now I wonder what I did for space before I got it.

  6. The armoire has a classic beauty that would go well with just about any decor. I bought one recently to use in the den. Even my husband commented on it. I was surprised that he even noticed it was there.
