White Oak Amish Furniture
White Oak is native to the entire eastern half of the United States. Its wood is a light-colored beige that is almost white when freshly cut; hence its name.
Quartersawn Oak is usually made from White Oak. White oak is very popular because it can stand up to liquids, which is the reason it was very popular among boat makers. The sapwood of white oak is usually light colored while the heartwood ranges from light brown to dark brown. It usually has a straight grain with a coarse texture. White oak is a hard wood that has medium bending strength and low stiffness. It has great resistance to wear and tear.
Amish furniture artisans like to use quarter-sawn white oak due to the wide planks it provides, and the distinguishing design making each piece of Amish Furniture created from it unique. White Oak is very stable, has a natural tendency not to rot or decay, and resists cupping, twist and cracking when properly finished. If you live in a high moisture region, Amish artisans recommend purchasing Amish made furniture created from white oak.

I like this type of chair with the tall backs. I also like the fact that the slats go side to side instead of top to bottom. I guess I'm just a non-conformist type of person. The white oak would be right up my alley too. I'm assuming you have tables available in white oak also. That would be a plus for me.
ReplyDeleteThe white oak reminds me of the blond finished bedroom outfit my sister had when she was first married. I always liked that set but it seems that all furniture now is darker wood.
ReplyDeleteI don't care for the light color but I love the chair. I'm glad it's available in darker finishes.
ReplyDeleteI bet that chair is really comfortable to sit it and the looks are pretty modern too. I've been thinking of getting a new table and chairs and this might be the place and time to see that through.
