Spring Cleaning Organizing Tips ~ The Dumping Zone – Entryway
Oh I am sure many of you can feel me on this one. As soon as anyone enters the door, no matter what age, everything is dropped as soon as a foot crosses the threshold. It doesn’t matter what is in the persons hand, or even how old the individual is, it will be dropped – coats, hats, school bags, shoes, boots, gloves, mail, newspaper, rocks, dirt, mud, pet insects, you name it, you can find it in the entry way. Here is the kicker - the entryway is the first place a guest sees when entering your home. It is where they get their very first impression. Now for some a cluttered entry way may be a good thing if you are trying to divert people from visiting, but for the rest, it just isn’t the impression you want to give.
Training the individuals in your home to be more considerate of the entryway space can be a bit of a challenge. For some reason when someone hits a door way whatever is in their possession all of the sudden begins to weigh a ton and they just can’t take it any more. You could enroll them in weight training and have them pumping 250 lbs and they would still swear that the newspaper weighs 300 pounds. So what do you do? First off, get organized. Establish each family member their own space to where their belongings go. If their is not an easy coat closet in your entry way, consider getting an Amish Coat rack. The Amish sitting benches help a lot with this problem as well because some styles have storage under the bench. But that may not be enough. You may need to hang hooks on your wall for book bags, umbrellas, and coats as well and put nice little name tags above them because for some, if it isn’t spelled out, it just doesn’t matter.
You may have to have a handy basket by the doorway for all mail and newspapers to go into. Now getting those lovely family members to put the mail where the mail goes, coats where the coats go, shoes where the shoes go etc. can be a bit of a struggle on its own. You may have to set up a reward system for those who comply until they all get the hang of it.
If you don’t think they will quite “get it”, just put a laundry basket and tell the to deposit everything but shoes and coats in it. That way at least if company is coming you can merely hide the basket and deal with it when you have time.
One trick I use is by simply telling everyone in the home, “Either move it or lose it” and then I give them 5 minutes and anything left behind that isn’t in its proper place will end up in the trash! It is amazing how fast they will relocate those items. Just beware… next time you enter their room, if you can, you will quickly see where the door way clutter has relocated to.

The Basket Towers with the bench and overhead shelf would be a God send for my back door area. I hate to use that door myself because the clutter is unreal. I would lay down and die if company ever came to that door. Thanks for the great idea. I'm on my way with a tape measure to make sure it will fit.
ReplyDeleteI want it, no doubt about that. It would sure solve the 'drop it zone' problem at my house. I swear there are times when you can't get in that door for all the clutter which usually includes book bags, clothes, shoes and a trash bag that needs to go out. I'm going to order it right now. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea and it's very good looking too. I can think of 2 rooms where I could put this to good use.
ReplyDeleteAmish furniture has always been my first choice. It's craftsmanship is always top of the line. It's made to last and the basket towers and bench are a prime example. This is nice enough to use in both entryways of my home.
