Tips For Removing Scratches from Wood Furniture

Scratches in a great piece of Amish Furniture can break a person’s heart if you don’t know how to repair it. Here are some tips for repairing or disguising scratches in your wood furniture.

When repairing a scratch in wood, make sure you always rub with the grain of the wood.

For all minor scratches, regardless of the finish, cover each scratch with a generous amount of white petroleum jelly. Allow it to set for 24 hours. After sitting, rub the jelly into the wood, remove any excess, and polish as normal. Liquid Gold also works well, but when on a budget, petroleum jelly works well also.

For all major scratches fill by rubbing with a wax stick (available in all colors at any hardware or paint store) or a crayon that matches the color of the woods finish.

Light Finished Furniture
Scratches can be hidden by using tan shoe polis, however, only use on shiny or high polished finishes.

Walnut Finish
Remove the meat from a fresh unsalted walnut or pecan nut. Break the nut in half and with the exposed meat side, rub the scratch.

Mahogany Finish:
You can rub the scratch with a dark brown crayon or buff with a brown paste wax.

Red Mahogany Finish:
Apply ordinary iodine with a small paintbrush.

Maple Finish:
Combine an equal amount of iodine and denatured alcohol. Apply it to the scratch with a Q-tip tHen dry, wax, and buff.

Ebony Finish:
Use black shoe polish, black eye brow pencil, or a black crayon to disquise the scratch.

Teakwood Finish:
Rub very gently with 0000 steel wool. Run equal amounts of linseed oil and turpentine into the scratch.

  1. I love the Modesto line of furniture. The three pieces shown in the photo would look great in my living room. I've wanted to buy some new furniture but just didn't care for what I was seeing. Obviously, I was looking in the wrong place!

  2. Oh thank you, thank you, thank you! This is exactly what I was looking for. My husband surprised me with an Amish built dining room set that I've been wanting for months. My grandson took a ball point pen and was writing on a piece of paper on the chair. The pen slipped off the edge of the paper and left a mark that went into the finish. Now, I know how to repair it and I know that my grandson will be using his little table instead of any other furniture when he wants to be creative!

  3. I really like the style of the table and cabinets. We have a log cabin in the mountains and this style of furniture looks like it was made for our place. Over the years we have invested in several pieces of Amish made furniture and have been more than satisfied with each and every piece. These 3 pieces are our next purchase. I'm excitedly awaiting delivery.

  4. My grandma used to have a small ice box that looked a lot like the single door end table in the picture. I haven't thought of that old ice box in a long time. Thanks for the memory! I really like the look of the Modesto pieces. When I get my house I'm going to fill it with Amish made furniture.

  5. The Modesto line rocks! I'd be pretty ticked if someone left a scar on a piece of furniture like that. It's good to know that there are ways to fix it though.
