Spring Cleaning Organizing Tips ~ Kitchen Table and Counters

Back in the day, the kitchen was used for one to two primary reasons, cooking, and eating. That isn’t the case any longer. Used to be children did their homework in their bedrooms or sprawled out on the living room floor. Now the kitchen table and even kitchen counters are the central locations of school projects. But it isn’t just the kids taking over the kitchen domain. The kitchen has become the central communication center, mail drop, social gathering spot, and the collect all center of the universe. Here are some tips to help you hopefully regain control of your kitchen so when it comes to using it for its primary purpose you won’t have to spend an hour first clearing away debris in order to do so.

Hang a calendar that has ample room for jotting down notes and instead of hanging on to every piece of paper your child brings home from school for upcoming functions, you can simply jot down the function and toss the paper. Do what ever you can to slow down the paper flow into the kitchen. Set a mail basket in a central location away from the kitchen table and counter, and train those lovely little mail delivery people just where to put the incoming.

Plastic totes- you have got to love them! As much as school is of great importance in your child’s life, it is hard to manage all their incoming art projects and papers. Get a tote for each of your children and after looking at your child’s prize pieces place them in their tote and lid it. Once a month go through the tote and eliminate items you can dispose of without too much grief from your child.

Furnish your child’s room with a suitable study center adorned with proper lighting to redirect their schoolwork to a location other than your table. For younger children this may be a bit more difficult. For one thing, when they are small they are learning study habits and it is wise for a parent to be actively involved in their after schoolwork. Set up a desk in the family room if possible so you are at close hand if needed and you can easily oversee just how they are working and put yourself in the position to be able to easily intervene when need be.

Keep only items you really need or love and just can’t part with. If something has been sitting on the counter for more than a couple days, more than likely it can go. If it is something of importance, attend to it and then eliminate the extra clutter.

Make sure everything has its proper place. Don’t hang on to things with the attention of “I could use that for…..” and then set it aside. Either use it or lose it!

If you have any helpful hints to lessen the clutter in a kitchen, please feel free to share.

  1. I love my kitchen and it's where I spend the majority of my time each day. I have no problem taking company to that room instead of the living room. I've been thinking of replacing my table & chairs with a nook set and I really like the looks of this one. I'm drawn by the extra storage it will provide too.

  2. My kitchen is pretty small and I've never had a table in there. We have a dining room so I never saw the need. This would fit perfectly, I already checked the measurements. There are a lot of times that I would like to eat in the kitchen instead of hauling everything to the dining room. It's perfect.

  3. With the addition of the soft cushions I bet this would be extremely comfortable. It's a classy looking piece that would look great in just about any kitchen.

  4. I never thought I would be saying this but I think I'd like to have this breakfast nook in my kitchen. It's compact and very practical and even has storage space. I'd probably add some cushions, but then again, maybe not. I really like the looks of it just as it is.
