Buying Amish Furniture Online

Although you will not see phone lines running thorough Amish communities, no cell phones, cars, internet, and other things most consider a necessity, the Amish furniture market has managed to expand to include online marketing and sales. Because of the Amish beliefs, they are unable to run the websites themselves, however the Amish are not ignorant and are good businessmen. They know the value in their product as well as the demand. They also know not everyone lives next door to an Amish community to where they can easily obtain the fine quality Amish furniture they desire. With that, many Amish woodcrafters have built relationships with retailers to bring Amish furniture to anyone who desires it. Because of this, the Amish have been able to maintain their beliefs of simple living and still make Amish furniture available to a wider market. Thanks to this relationship, one does not have to visit a retail location to select the specific wood, stain, or upholstery they desire in their Amish furniture they wish to purchase. This can all be done online and the finished piece shipped directly to the consumer. It is the best of both world’s for everyone involved and no ones beliefs are ever jeopardized.

Styles of Amish Furniture

Mission and Shaker are two styles of chairs well known to anyone who knows anything about Amish furniture. Characterized by straight lines and exposed joinery gives the Mission style chair it’s modern sleek look although it has been a ongoing chair style for many years. The Shaker style chair is characterized by its simplicity, function, and durability. These are just two of the various styles of Amish chairs. Other styles available are the Queen Anne, Southwestern, Rustic, Cottage, and even Beachfront.

Amish styles of furniture are developed throughout time within families of woodworkers. The traditions are handed down throughout generations and many Amish families become known for their specific design details. Some families may only focus on outdoor furniture, where as another may be dedicated to kitchen tables and chairs, and others on chest of drawers, etc. What adds to the value of Amish furniture is that no two pieces will ever be identical. The care taken in hand choosing the wood specific to the piece being created adds to the uniqueness of each piece. The woodworkers personal traditions carried down through their families also accent each piece’s style as well as the love of the craft that the Amish have can be seen in each piece.

There are many styles of Amish furniture, a style for every taste, for every household, a style for every style.

Amish Furniture Making Technique

As it has been known throughout history, the Amish do not use electricity to create their many masterful pieces of furniture, however, many of the woodworking tools in Amish shops are powered by hydraulic and pneumatic power that are ran on diesel generators. However, this small allotted amount of power is used for major cuts for construction as the detail and finish work is all done by hand. There are still some Amish woodworkers who opt to use nothing but hand tools. With Amish furniture supporting a large part of the livelihoods of the Amish communities and the widespread demand of high quality Amish furniture, even with the small-allotted amount of power used, it is amazing how these craftsmen are able meet the demands and still have the high quality in each and every piece as they do.

The History of Amish Furniture

Amish furniture has been around as long as the Amish community has but first gained attention from others outside the Amish community in the 1920’s. American Folk Art was discovered during this time and Amish furniture was dotted as pieces of art, with just reason; Amish Furniture is beautiful. Historians and dealers of “Folk Art” placed great value on the artisanship and beauty of Amish made furniture.

During this time, various styles of Amish furniture began to emerge. The Jonestown School style, most widely known for the painted black chest decorated with flowers on three panels reflecting their German heritage, made its debut in the 18 century and is on display today at the Smithsonian and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Another early style of Amish furniture is the Soap Hollow School that were often painted in bright red, gold and black.

The lack of electricity has never hindered the fine quality of Amish furniture. If anything, it added to its quality. Everything is completed by hand using nothing but hand tools making the detail and finish exceptional. The one thing you can count on with Amish furniture is that even throughout the many years Amish furniture has been available to the public, the pride and craftsmanship put into it has never changed.

Why Amish Furniture?

Amish furniture is a distinctive style of furniture made by the Amish and is known for being made of 100% wood. Usually no particleboard or laminate is ever used. Great attention is paid to the details of the wood during the hand selection process to match the specific nature of the piece furniture to be made.

Everything is thought out thoroughly when creating each piece of furniture, from the grain of the wood during any gluing process through final construction. Each piece is distinctive due to the personal hands on care taken to create it. Amish furniture is known for its beauty, for its longlivity, and its remarkable artisanship. Amish woodworkers take tremendous pride in their workmanship. Each piece of authentic Amish furniture is a reflection of this pride.

Authentic Amish furniture is not only an excellent value, but a timeless piece of art, an heirloom that can be handed down from generation to generation.
