Be Ready when the Baby Stork Arrives with an Amish Highchair

What is the one thing that is handed down from child to child as they enter the world into a family other than the baby bed? Well, if you have a solid and durable Amish Highchair that would be the answer. The great thing about Amish Highchairs is that it can go through so many generations in a family. Even if it gets a few grape juice stains, it can be sanded and made to look good as new with just some simple refinishing. It brings history to a family, a common denominator, a family bond. And isn’t that what family is all about? No price can be put on that.

Amish Highchairs not only create memories through generations, it provides a safe place to feed your infant. Metal-legged highchairs are not always as stable and can easily be overturned. An antsy child and an unstable highchair equals danger. Amish Highchairs are constructed with a growing infants needs and can easily take your child through early toddler years. Look at some of the great styles of Amish Highchairs Amish Retail.com can have delivered to your door just in time before the baby stork arrives.

White Oak Amish Furniture

White Oak is native to the entire eastern half of the United States. Its wood is a light-colored beige that is almost white when freshly cut; hence its name.

Quartersawn Oak is usually made from White Oak. White oak is very popular because it can stand up to liquids, which is the reason it was very popular among boat makers. The sapwood of white oak is usually light colored while the heartwood ranges from light brown to dark brown. It usually has a straight grain with a coarse texture. White oak is a hard wood that has medium bending strength and low stiffness. It has great resistance to wear and tear.

Amish furniture artisans like to use quarter-sawn white oak due to the wide planks it provides, and the distinguishing design making each piece of Amish Furniture created from it unique. White Oak is very stable, has a natural tendency not to rot or decay, and resists cupping, twist and cracking when properly finished. If you live in a high moisture region, Amish artisans recommend purchasing Amish made furniture created from white oak.

Cedar Amish Furniture

Most people know the benefits of storing items in a cedar chest or cedar lined closet. Its aromatic heartwood is lavender-red in color, and is prized for making Amish cedar chests, closet wood lining, cedar shavings, Amish outdoor furniture, and small Amish carvings. The aroma of Amish cedar furniture alone will make one fall in love with it. A lot of the Amish outdoor furniture is made from cedar wood, generally in their log style furniture.

Cedar or also known as Red cedar is actually a type of Juniper. Junipers can reach heights up to 30 feet and can grow as wide as 15 feet when found in the open. Cedar Amish Furniture is known for its durability and its aromatic essence that can leave an entire room smelling fresh. The most commonly purchased Amish furniture piece is the cedar chest.

ABOUT THE PICTURE:
48" Adirondack Cedar Love Glider - New Style

Western Red Cedar is lightweight but stable and is less likely to crack, bow or sag and warp than even treated lumber.

Western Red Cedar "heart wood" contains natural oils that act as preservatives to help the wood resist insect attack and decay. This same oil gives cedar its distinctive smell and does not absorb much heat and on the hottest days, your cedar furniture will stay cool.

Western Red Cedar furniture does not need to be finished. If allowed to age outdoors without finish, the wood grain will raise slightly and the wood will weather to a light silver-gray with darker streaks. However, we feel that it is the best interest of our customers that you would like to maintain the gold color of the Western Red Cedar, so we apply a sealer to protect the wood from water and sun. This makes your new Western Red Cedar addition even more enjoyable and lasting.

Do you have a Child Artist in the Family?

You are probably wondering what the picture of an Amish Dresser has to do with a child artist. Bear with me for a second and you will quickly find out. This is a personal story of my own son who from the time he could hold a crayon, pencil, or pen, began to draw. I loved all the pictures he drew for me, but the problem was he could go through a bulk of paper in two weeks flat. As you can imagine, this made for a whole lot of “special” pictures that had to be saved. Realistically I quickly saw that saving each and every drawing he made was not going to be possible. I would have been a great candidate for the show “Hoarders” had I done so. Thus entering into the picture, the Amish Dresser.

As my son drew, I had to find a place to locate the drawings. With a little forethought and a beautiful Amish made dresser the soon to be hoarder problem was solved. As he drew, my son was directed to place his drawings into this dresser that was in his room just for his drawings. He had accesses to all six drawers (the top two for his pencils, markers, crayons, and pens and the other 4 for his finished work) so he could separate his drawings if he chose, or just pile them on top of one another as they were completed. Now some may be thinking, that is a pricey investment just so your child can save his pictures. Maybe so if tat was all it meant, but some things are worth more than any dollar amount. See, after my son would draw for a week or two, on a rainy free day we would sit on his bedroom floor and go through each and everyone one of his pictures as he would tell me the stories behind them. I would ask him if I could have 5 of my favorites each time and make a big deal out of how hard it was to choose. With the remainder of the pictures, we would make separate piles, one for grandma, others for aunts, and friends. As we separated them we would place them in large manila envelops, address them, and send them on to their recipient as a special mail package. As you can see from where this is going, by the time we were done, we had not only cleaned out the dresser of drawings, and gifted others, but we made great memories.

As my son grew, the drawing slowed down as he honed his skills and the need for the dresser for storage ceased. However, as he grew so did his wardrobe, so what was once a memory maker quickly grew into it’s initial intention, a great dresser that will last for generations to come and hopefully grow memories with his own children one day.

The Truth about Organizing a Child’s Room

We are the creator of our children’s messy room to a degree. After all, it is we who provide them with the items we call excessive clutter that starts to bury them in. It is great fun for us as adults to adorn our children in toys (especially on Birthdays and Christmas) but also are greatest demise when it comes to keeping their rooms clear enough so when we enter we do not trip over Transformers, Barbie’s, games, and all the other must have collections that have gathered over the years. If we want to keep from breaking our neck by tripping over a toy or whatnot to merely give our child a kiss goodnight, we must take action and create a space that your child will be happy with, yet one we won’t kill ourselves in.

First step in organizing a child’s room is making it child friendly. I’m sure you all have seen articles where they give you storage 101 tips, suggesting you provide plastic bins for this and that. By the time you are done separating the Lego’s from the Transformers, from the train track from the Hot Wheels, etc, your child’s room is stacked from floor to ceiling in plastic bins. And do you really think your 5 year old or even 13 year old is going to make sure the toys that come out of the bins go back into the right one when they are done playing with them? Don’t kid yourself, it will never happen unless you do it yourself. That is defeating the entire purpose of child friendly organizing.

Now let’s be realistic, unless your child has an obsessive compulsive in things being in their proper place, your child is not going to put the Transformers in the Transformers’ bin, Lego’s in the Lego bin, Hot Wheels in the Hot Wheel bin, etc. It is too time consuming and they are all about getting every second out of their free time for play. Instead of making pick up time an overwhelming task, make it simple and quick a sturdy Amish Made Toy Chest. Come pick up time they can just throw all their toys into the chest and shut the top. Sure, the toys will be mixed up, but they will be all in one place and guess what, your child doesn’t have a problem digging to the bottom of his/her toy chest for that one particular Hot Wheel or doll. Best part is, even if you are stuck having to pick up, it is by far faster then doing all the sorting dealing with bins. Sure, the plastic bins look neat in magazine articles, but the realty of it staying that way for any amount of time will be no longer then it takes to snap a picture and then it is history. Make life easy for you and your child. Save the stress for both of you with a durable Amish Made wood toy chest. There are plenty of other things to stress over, like dishes and laundry.

Resources to Help you Pick the Perfect Colors for your Room

Since I do a lot of references to colors used in a room to set a mood and best compliment your Amish Furniture I thought it would be helpful to provide you with some online resources. The ones I am sharing today are ones I feel give a wide variety of color combinations in their paints as well as tips in how to paint a room, and color schemes that work for various room settings as well as moods.

Pratt and Lambert Paints

Benjamin Moore Paints

Sherwin-Williams

Glidden Paints

Ralph Lauren Paint

Valspar Paint and Coatings

When shopping for paint, make sure you pay attention to the paints finish. There are 5 basic finishes that each give a specific look. Here is a break down of the five to give you a head start before you buy any paint.

Flat: A sheen-free saturated hides surface flaws but makes it hard to clean. Best used for ceilings or areas that does not get a lot of wear and tear. Should never be used in a room where smoking is allowed. It will absorb the odor more than other types of paint and is harder to eliminate.

Eggshell: This is washable. Has a slight bit more luster than the flat and can be touched up. Works better for smooth, blemish free walls.

Satin: This finish has a low luster pearly sheen that is a touch shiner than eggshell. Satin is a great choice for bathrooms and kitchens if your walls are in good shape, but a touch more difficult in touch ups. Is a great choice for bedroom walls, office, den, rec. rooms, and living rooms due to easy clean up.

Semi-gloss: Shiny, easily washable. Good for painted woodwork and moldings. Holds up to moisture well which makes it a good choice for basements, kitchens, and bathrooms. However, if you do not like a shine to your walls, stick with the Satin or Eggshell finishes.

High Gloss: Super shiny, super durable, and super easy to clean up. Mostly used on banisters, kitchen cabinets, and other woodwork that gets a lot of traffic. Not a good choice for walls.

Turn your Spare Room Into a Home Office/Guest Room

Many people are adding an office in their home and not always for work related purposes. Some people have found themselves going back to school after many years of being out of the traditional education scheme of things. Regardless if you need to add a home office space for continuing education, work, home finances, or just a place to call your own and use it for a multiple functioning purpose, you want it to be both attractive and efficient. But what if that same space you have set aside was the spare bedroom you used for the occasional guest that come to visit? Strategizing a functional, work efficient, yet a comfortable enough room to make overnight guest feel at ease can be a challenge.

Just as metal is cold to the touch, it is cold to an over all feeling of a room. Furnishing a home office/guest room with a metal desk, regardless of color will instantly make a room feel less inviting and more business oriented. Remember, the two major pieces of furniture will be the office desk and the bed in the room and the first things ones eye will be drawn to. It will set the entire mood to the room. By furnishing the room in wood furniture you will give a warm and comforting feel to it, yet get all the functionality and efficiency your desire.

It is far easier to accessories a room where its main furniture is done in wood rather than metal. Metal has its place in the world, and even in room furnishing, but is more suited to offices off set from ones home.

The size of your room will determine the exact type of wood furniture you will be able to accessories with. If the room is smaller, then a smaller wooden desk and a wooden bed would be a great place to start.

Stain Guide

Accessorize further with a comfortable sitting chair with a side table for evening reading and an area you can fit with an entertainment center for space allotted.

Lighting can be somewhat trickier when sharing a space with a work center/guest bedroom. Although you want appropriate lighting for working, you do not want it so bright that a guest could not relax in the evening. Task lighting works well for this with the office section of the room having separate extra lighting that can be turned on when needed. A lamp is sufficient on a side table next to the comfortable chair for reading.

Keep wall color to mattes. Stark whites and bright colors although maybe more conducive to work is not conducive to relaxation and sleep for a guest. Stick with the more natural tones as they will compliment your wood furniture as well. Some shades of paint that work well in an office/guest room are the Macadamia and Moderate White by Sherwin William. You can go to any paint supplier though and get paint samples to get a feel for some colors before the paint ever hits the wall. Tape the samples up on your wall and live with them for a couple days before making a final decision. Take into consideration the color of the carpet, fabrics, and accessories in the space as well.

Redoing a Child’s to Teen Bedroom

Isn’t it great when your kids are toddlers and when you play your cards right, you can outfit them with the perfect bed that will take them through at least 1st or 2nd grade? It’s too bad they don’t stay those sweet tender ages, but unfortunately, they grow older. They grow bigger. They grow more demanding. And they grow their own taste! No more decorating your child’s rooms in the colors that are appealing to you and no more baby beds.

Your child is not yet old enough to be disgruntled about what furniture you purchase for their bedroom. They may however voice their opinion on how they want their walls colored, their bedding design, and possibly even curtains. But the major purchases, you still have all the say with little to nil backlash from a disgruntled teen. It is that prime age - ranging from the sweet yet ages of 8 to 10 going on to the more worrisome ages of 12 to 14. However, if you play your cards right, the furniture you purchase this time will take them through their high school graduation, to their college dorm and graduation, through their first pad of their own, and right on to their first home to be later used after years of guest room furniture hopefully, to their own children’s bedroom furniture.

Amish made furniture has the durability to last lifetimes. It has classic styles that never go out of date. It is beautiful, yet not considered to manly by a female, nor to girly by a male. It is perfect in every way furniture should be. You can easily outfit a girl or a boys bedroom in this transitioning ages with Amish made furniture that will carry them through right out your door and into their, that is if you can let it go with the kids!

Decorating your Kitchen

Kitchens are the control center of any home. When guest come, generally the first place everyone goes is to the kitchen table. When the kids come home from school, their first stop is the kitchen to raid the frig and leave their markings behind on the kitchen table. The kitchen table is the collect all for everyone in the homes world, from school work, to brief cases, to groceries, to toys, to dishes, to mail, to permission slips, to coats on backs of chairs and book bags and just about anything else one could conceivable think of. If it is lost, check the kitchen table.

It goes without saying that every kitchen needs a solid and sturdy kitchen table to handle all the types of traffic it receives. Amish kitchen tables are the perfect choice if you want a table that can take a beating and still continue to stand and shine. But does that mean your table has to take the blunt of the abuse? No- not if you put a few strategic pieces of Amish furnishing about to take some of that burden away from your table.

28" Shaker hall seat

Have this handy sitting bench/coat rack/storage compartment near your main entry way, the door your children, husband, or wife for that matter enters into your home. This will quickly become the spot where coats, book bags, shoes, and brief cases finding their nesting spot. The training to hang items accordingly is left up to you. But human nature is to drop the luggage as soon as possible, so make it a quick drop before it ever reaches your table.

Notepad with Letter Holder - Cherry

Wicker Basket, Fruit-Small

Depending on who is bringing in the mail, and the concern level will determine where would be the best location for a mail basket or a hanging mail holder in your home. If the retriever has little concern for what is in the daily mail, set the basket near the entryway and accessories with a organizer near your desk. If they are a bit more reliable, you can center your mail deposit basket near where you do your bills.

Now you may ask, what does any of this have to do with decorating your kitchen. Well by removing the family clutter out of the kitchen and training the household gently by leaving their deposits elsewhere leaves you kitchen clutter free and ready for unexpected guest. If a clutter free kitchen isn’t the finest aspect of decorating, I would like to know what is. :-)

Mother’s Day is Making its Way

Mother’s Day is quickly approaching. Come May 9th, if you do not have something to show for the woman who brought you into this world, or the woman who bore your children, and for some, even their grandmother, you may find yourself in a world of hurts. Every Mother’s Day I quickly think of a scene on the “Cosby Show” some years back. Not saying how many years, but Dr. Huxtable makes a statement to Theo that went something like “I brought you into this world, and I will take you out of this world” when Theo had done something wrong. I can’t remember exactly, but it always has stuck in my head, so whenever Mother’s Day approaches, that comment comes to mind and I think.. I best show my appreciation! Mind you, I don’t think my mother would take me out of this world, but I am not giving her any reason either! Of course, that is all in fun. On the more serious side, Mother’s do need to be observed for all the wonderful things they have done. Every once in a while, something other than a flower bouquet, candy, or a meal out to celebrate Mother’s Day is a great way to cement that appreciation in your mother’s eyes and heart forever… something that will last as long as you want your mother to be around, - forever. Your mother will cherish Amish furniture forever. Every time your mother looks at the Amish made furniture piece you got her for Mother’s Day, she will smile and think of you. Moreover, I don’t think you will ever have to worry about hearing “I brought you into this world, I can take you out of it too.”

Here are just a few suggestions that any mother would love this coming Mother’s Day that will become a family heirloom for generations.

Hutches make a great Mother's Day gift like the Boston Shaker Hutches.

Both units are shown in oak with standard wood knobs. Features include recessed display lighting, dovetailed drawers with full extension drawer slides. Adjustable hardwood shelves in the base unit and Adjustable glass shelves with wood faces on the upper unit. This will allow the light to shine through. Plate groove on the glass shelf is standard.
Choose from Oak, cherry, quartersawn oak, maple or Hickory.

Curio Cabinets are a common favorite amongst women. They make a terrific accent to any room and a perfect Mother's day gift like the Beanie Bin Curio.

Beanie Bin Curio - 45" High x 30" Wide x 13" Deep. FEATURES: 2 Side Glass Doors, Rope Twists, Light, 3 Adjustable Glass Shelves w/ Plate Grooves, Mirror Back. OPTIONS: Beveled Glass Front. Chest and Cedar Trunks are always a delight to recieve as a gift on any occasion, but having one delivered on Mother's Day will leave a lasting impact in your Mother's heart.

Hues News – Tones that Compliment your Amish Furniture

The mood of a room, the reason for its existence, and what its primary use is, all plays into its final color pallet. The colors you use set the mood or feel to a room. Bright colors like reds, oranges, and yellow create a lively room – the perfect backdrop for a family game room or kid’s room. A more relaxed low key room such as a bedroom, reading room, den or library fair better with a more tranquil feel that can be obtained with blues, greens, or warm soft purples. And for those rooms that get action at all levels, from high to low key afternoon naps, neutrals are always safe. Neutrals such as the grays, whites, and browns complement most any room.

Depending on the lighting source of a room can also affect a color scheme. If a room has many windows that bring in the natural sunlight of the day, pale shades compliment the natures brightening rays and accent your Amish furniture with brilliance. In rooms where the majority of the lighting source comes from overhead lighting or lamps, deeper tones fair better as long as the room is spacious. The smaller the space, the lighter the hues you should use or you and your Amish furniture will begin to feel cramped quick.
