Wood Types ~ Hard Maple

Hard Maple comes from maple trees belonging to the binomial name, Acer Saccharum. The genus Acer, species saccharum are native to Eastern North America and the official state tree of Wisconsin, Vermont, New York and West Virginia. Hard Maple Amish Furniture is blondish creamy white with a slight tannish color. It generally has a fine straight textured grain, but sometimes the grain can display a bird’s eye or burl grain resulting in small circular patterns. Hard Maple ranks very high on the Janka Hardness scale scoring 1450 lbf (pounds-force) making it extremely durable.

It is valued for its hard, dense, fine-grained and difficult-to-split wood, which is utilized for floors, Amish furniture, veneer, musical instruments, and railroad ties. Nearly all Amish furniture built with maple is not stained. Amish finishing shops spray clear conversion varnish on the maple to protect it.

Wood Type ~ Cherry

Cherry used in Amish furniture is actually called Black Cherry. Cherry is a fine hardwood, but is the softest of the woods Amish use. It’s Janka hardness is 950 making it just as durable as soft maple.

Cherry comes from cherry trees belonging to the binomial name Prunus Serotina. The genus Prunus, species Serotina is native to North America. The color of cherry Amish Furniture is rich red to reddish brown and will darken with age and exposure to light. The wood has a thin consistent, straight grain with a soft texture and may naturally contain brown pith particles and small gum pockets.

Cherry that is used in Amish furniture was most likely just built. This wood is actually more “pink” and if sprayed with a natural finish, or clear coat of conversion varnish, it will take up to 6 months to “naturally darken to a golden color”.

Many companies use other similar grained woods that are cheaper, then stain the wood to look like cherry. They then try to sell it for a higher price. Amish Craftsmen only use 100% solid cherry and never cut corners trying to “fake it”.

Never place anything on top of a new Cherry piece of Amish Furniture for at least 6 months after purchase. The sun will not be able to naturally darken covered areas and you will be left with the noticeable lighter area in the shape of whatever you had placed on the piece of furniture. If you bought a piece of Amish Cherry Furniture that comes with an extra leaf such as with tables, make sure you have them exposed to the same sunlight as the rest of the piece so they all darken consistently and naturally in unison.

What is "Organic" and is it for our family?

We offer an "organic" option on our line of baby and youth furniture. Organic means the product is 100% free of VOC's and Carbon neutral. There are NO chemicals, NO preservatives, food safe along with high environmental standards.

Why the higher price?

In order to be compliant, the wood is dried in a "natural Kiln", stained with a special finish by hand and all the pieces are solid wood. Our normal backs and drawer bottoms are cabinet grade plywood made here in the USA. They don't use a carbon neutral "resin" to bond the plywood, so we had to build those pieces from solid wood.

The extra lumber cost, labor and finish costs reflect the up charge in price.

If you have questions about organic visit their website at www.greenseal.org

Please allow 12 weeks for delivery when selecting the organic finish.

Queen Anne Style
- A style of furniture that arose in Great Britain during the reign of Queen Anne (1702-14) and therefore was named after her. Arranging your Bedroom Furniture Tips

Have you ever had a bedroom to where there was only one way you could arrange it because it was so small or oddly shaped? I had both dilemmas in one year and since those days have made a conscious choice never to put myself in that position again. I can’t even count how many times I stubbed toes on my bed, or bruised my leg trying to squeeze between the wall and the bed to make it or to simply escape out of the room. The room was no way any shape or form a place I wanted to spend in quality time. Sometimes, that the card we are thrown and there is not much we can do about it but make it work but when you do have room to arrange a bedroom suite the way you like, here are some tips to help you get the most of your space.

If you have a spacious room and want to give it a dramatic look you can angle out your focal piece in a corner. If your room has a lot of windows or extra doors, this is a good way to get around blocking off summer air flow from the windows as well as provide a central focus when arranging other pieces around it. Most bedrooms focal point is the bed itself unless your room comes with a fireplace, then that would be your focal point in which you would arrange your bedroom around.

Whatever the focal point is of the bedroom, use area rugs and/or side tables as accents. If your bed is the focal point, placing an area rug at the foot of the bed and two side tables gives the area a cozy comfortable aire. Also, if the bed is the focal point, make sure it pops out at the eye. You can do this by positioning a trunk or a sitting bench at the foot of the bed and by having large accent pillows.

If bedroom size allots, you can balance a bed off by adding a seating area opposite of where the bed lies. Make sure to follow the rule of thumbs mentioned in “Arranging Living Room Furniture Tips” on spacing and table availability. And by all means make sure there is ample room to move freely around the bed and other furniture in your bedroom. My toes can attest to the value in that tip!

Arranging your Multipurpose Room Furniture Tips

When you are lucky enough to have both a living room and a multipurpose room that you can use for entertaining, it can make life a bit easier in arranging furniture. For one thing, you can use your living room for relaxing none media entertain or just taking in a good book. You can use the multipurpose room for entertaining electronic or television wise, or use it for a dinning room especially if your kitchen isn’t designed to allow for a dinning section.

If you are first moving into a home that has a multipurpose room, you will first need to decide what its function is to be. You may decide to use the room for more than one purpose if the room is big enough such as a dinning room and an office desk area for dealing with bills and whatnot. If you are one of those that just can’t miss a certain television program, you may combine a dinning area with an entertainment area. Once that is decided, you can begin to decorate and arrange your furniture specific for the room.

When you begin arranging a multipurpose room, give each area you intend to create an dominate feature. Say it will be a dinning room/office. The dinning room’s main feature could be a hutch or it may be your dinning room table. The office section would more than likely be your desk. Place the dominate features at opposite sides of the room to create a balance. Sketch a basic diagram of the room and where you intend to place furniture first to save you a lot of moving labor. This will also give you a feel for the balance of the room. Once you are okay with it you can start placing furniture. If you find as you go that something doesn’t feel right, play around with the space some more. You may find, due to the dimensions of the room, that striking a equal balance between two themes may be impossible, such as an entertainment area and a dinning area. These two are fairly big arrangement groups and can take up quite a bit of space. You may have to combine the two rather than having two separate areas in one room.

Use furniture to make a natural divide between the two living areas by using the back of a sofa facing the backs of the dinning table chairs, or the back of an office chair to the back of the sofa, etc. You can also use room dividers to create the same effect such as folding screens. Throw rugs also help to create division

Create balance by using two or more smaller items against one large item. So say you are creating and office/dinning room multipurpose room. Since the desk and office chair is small compared to the dinning room table and chairs and a possible hutch, maybe add a filing cabinet or easy chair to the mix to create more balance.

Make sure that both areas have a nice flow for traffic allowing for at least three feet of space between each area and if one area is a dinning room area, at least 3 feet of space behind sitting area for comfortable seating as well as ease moving from seating and around others still sitting.

Arranging your Living Room Furniture Tips

Especially if your space is limited, the arrangement of any room is critical. When it comes to arranging your living room furniture, you want to make sure it has a nice flow, has ease of interacting, and comfortable seating for all to enjoy an entertainment center without breaking their neck.

The best way to start arranging your living room furniture is to start with a focal point. A focal point is the anchor of the room and should be on a wall or flush with a wall. It can be a fireplace, an entertainment center, window, or even a picture. You living room furniture will be placed strategically in front of your focal point.

Depending on the size of your room will determine just how much furniture the room can hold comfortable and elegantly. It will also determine the spacing between living room furniture pieces. Chairs should not be any further than 8 feet apart. Any further makes it impossible to have intimate conversation.

A table should be within reach of every seating piece and if possible, some form of lighting. When using a coffee table to provide seating table space, make sure there is ample legroom between seat and table. A good rule of thumb is leave at least 14 to 18 inches from seating to table.

Side tables are a great way to provide table space without having to use legroom. Make sure that the table is as tall as the arm of the seating furniture that they will be set by. Make sure there is ample room for traffic flow. There is nothing worse than maneuvering around a room where you risk tripping over people’s feet or knocking a table over.

Do you have any special things when arranging your living room furniture? Please share!

Hanging Amish Pictures or Mirrors

Do you find yourself buying pictures to work in places where you have previously attempted to hang pictures to cover up nail holes from misjudgments? You wouldn’t be the first! Here is a great way to never have that happen to you again when hanging Amish pictures or mirrors and it is simple!

Cut a paper pattern the size of the picture(s) that you plan to hang. Mark on it where the hangers are at. Tape the papers to the wall where you want to and your picture(s), step back and make sure it is level, then simply drive the nails where the hangers are!

If you rent and are not allowed to put nails in the wall, use sewing machine needles. They will hold up to 30 pounds and barely leave a mark in the wall.

Wobbly Chair and Table Legs

No matter how well built a piece of furniture is, over time, it will begin to show its age. This can be shown in wobbly table and chair legs. However, if you own a Amish table or chairs, just because a leg may become lose and begin to wobbly doesn’t mean it has to be replaced.

Wobbly chair legs can be secured by wrapping the lose end with a small strip of nylon hose or thread before applying glue to reinsert into its socket. Another way of securing it is to apply a few drops of wood expander prior to reinserting it into the socket. The same methods can be used on table legs that have become loose.

If your table wobbles because of a short leg, put a small amount of plastic wood on wax paper. Set the short leg on it and allow it to dry then just trim it down with a sharp knife and smooth with sandpaper.

Wood Furniture Tips

Accidents and mishaps happen and when they happen to our wood furniture we want to know how to correct it as quickly as possible. Sometimes, the quickness is out of our hands, especially when there are little ones involved. Take decals and stickers for example. Kids are notorious for sticking stickers on walls and furniture. To them they are only decorating, but to us, if found after the glue has dried can make us cringe. To remove old decals stuck on wood furniture simply paint them with white vinegar. Apply several coats and give it time to soak in good. Once it has been thoroughly saturated, you should be able to gently scratch it off with a fingernail.

With stickers comes paper, which can also become stuck to your wood furniture. Do not attempt to scrape it off with a knife. Instead, just pour some salad oil, a few drops at a time, on to the paper. Allow it to sit for a while and then just rub off with a soft cloth.

How about white water rings and spots? Simple. Just dampen a soft cloth with water and put a dab of toothpaste on it. For stubborn stains add baking soda to the toothpaste and then simply buff away the stain. If that doesn’t do the trick, try a paste of butter or mayonnaise with cigarette ashes, apply it to the spot and then buff away the stain with a slightly damp cloth and polish as usual.

Did someone bump the candle you sitting lit on your coffee table and spill wax? No worries. Pull out the hair dryer and soften the wax. Remove the wax with a paper towel as softening until no traces are left. Then wash down with a solution of vinegar and water. Dry thoroughly and polish as normal.

Amish Made Toys

How many of you remember having a wooden peg bench as a toy when you were young? I know I do and I loved it. I would spend hours in my toddler days just pounding away, although my aim wasn’t the best in the beginning, over time I was hitting as if I was a carpenter hitting the nail on the head every time. Because I could recall this toy as a child, of course I provided my own children with it. It was like looking back in time as I watched on while my kids mastered it over time. It was handed down to each and withheld the test of time and a whole lot of pounding.

There is just something about the simplicity in the Amish made wooden toys that draw me to them. There simplicity plays into a child’s imagination and there is no better thing a toy can do then that. How many of you recall any of these other Amish made wooden toys. Share your memories of them as a child or maybe you were not introduced to them until you had a child of your own.

Tips For Removing Scratches from Wood Furniture

Scratches in a great piece of Amish Furniture can break a person’s heart if you don’t know how to repair it. Here are some tips for repairing or disguising scratches in your wood furniture.

When repairing a scratch in wood, make sure you always rub with the grain of the wood.

For all minor scratches, regardless of the finish, cover each scratch with a generous amount of white petroleum jelly. Allow it to set for 24 hours. After sitting, rub the jelly into the wood, remove any excess, and polish as normal. Liquid Gold also works well, but when on a budget, petroleum jelly works well also.

For all major scratches fill by rubbing with a wax stick (available in all colors at any hardware or paint store) or a crayon that matches the color of the woods finish.

Light Finished Furniture
Scratches can be hidden by using tan shoe polis, however, only use on shiny or high polished finishes.

Walnut Finish
Remove the meat from a fresh unsalted walnut or pecan nut. Break the nut in half and with the exposed meat side, rub the scratch.

Mahogany Finish:
You can rub the scratch with a dark brown crayon or buff with a brown paste wax.

Red Mahogany Finish:
Apply ordinary iodine with a small paintbrush.

Maple Finish:
Combine an equal amount of iodine and denatured alcohol. Apply it to the scratch with a Q-tip tHen dry, wax, and buff.

Ebony Finish:
Use black shoe polish, black eye brow pencil, or a black crayon to disquise the scratch.

Teakwood Finish:
Rub very gently with 0000 steel wool. Run equal amounts of linseed oil and turpentine into the scratch.

Hints for Raising Babies to Children

Babies are wonderful, full of adventures and many first. Some are quite comically where others are enduring and some worrisome. Here are a few hints that will help you through just a few of the many first your baby will go through from infant to toddler.

Your baby begins its life in a baby bed. When it comes time for traveling to visit grandma or others who may not necessarily have a baby bed handy you will have to come up with an alternative sleeping arrangement for your bundle of joy. You can always put them in bed with you, but if you already have them in a solid habit of sleeping on their own, you don’t want a trip away from home to blow that for you. Instead, if you are traveling with a small baby and do not want to haul the baby bed with you simply haul a small inflatable pool with you. Blow it up when it comes to beddy bye time and cover it with a sheet. Make sure to secure the sheet well under the blow up pool. Bring along your baby’s blankets it normally would sleep with at home and you are good to go.

When it comes to comical first, here is a couple safety tips to prevent a couple that may be comical well after the fact but can be scary or worrisome at first. Adults are even non-observant at times when walking and have been known to walk into a glass door a time or two in their life. For little ones who have just discovered they can stand on two feet and move, glass doors can be a quick roadblock in their path – kind of like a bird and a clean window. Do your little one favor and prevent a few goose eggs on their noggin by placing a piece of colored tape at their eye level on any glass doors in your home. This will alert them that the door is shut.

Those adventurous little toddlers love to get into mischief and expand their perimeter to do so. If they see a door they can get through, they will, and if that door happens to be one that leads to the great outdoors, this can be quite worrisome when you have a toddler missing in action due to a slightly jarred door. To keep you on the alert to your wandering toddler, place a bell on all doors that lead to the great outdoors. If the bell is low enough for them to hit to make it ring, but not to actually hold or touch fully, you can bet they will ring the bell out of curiosity even before heading out. This will put you on the alert that you may soon have a run away toddler!

Along with a growing exploring baby comes the time when you graduate your baby from a baby crib to a bed. Again, parental worrisome can come into play. As a parent, you may experience sleepless nights worrying about your little one falling out of the bed in the middle of the night. A toddler may worry about falling out of the bed. To stop the worry for everyone involved and to get a good night sleep, take the crib mattress and place it on the floor along side the child’s bed. That way if he/se does fall out of the bed it is met with a soft and safe landing.

Your toddler will become quite creative when they begin to learn about paint. To keep your kitchen table paint free, messy spill free and without wet rings, get some large sponges from any dollar store. Cut out a circle in the center the size of the container being used to house the water or paint and slip the containers into the hole. This works well for glue too and saves you and your table from worry and excessive cleaning.

If you have any tips to help keep ones baby or toddler safe during their unrestraint adventurous years, leave your tips in the comments. One can never have enough tricks up their sleeve when it comes to child rearing!

Kitchen Clean Up Tips

I am not talking about kitchen clutter this time, I am talking about Kitchen appliances, burnt and scorched pots and pans, blenders, breadboards, cast iron skillets, kitchen sink drains, garbage disposals, graters, meat grinders, etc. Those items that keep your kitchen running smooth but can also bring you to a dead halt when preparing the family meal if not properly tended. The kitchen is the heart of ones home. It is where the family gathers at the dinning table to eat, where family meetings are held, where one shares a cup of coffee with a good friend. It is the communication hub in our home life. If the coffee pot is down, the leisurely chat with the neighbor next door is not quite as pleasant and if the pots and pans are scorched or burnt the family dinner can begin to lose it pizzazz for both the cook and the diner. These clean up tips for all around the kitchen will help you keep the heart of your home running smooth.

Appliances:
Yellowing on white appliances can be removed by mixing ½ cup of bleach, ½ cup of baking soda and 4 cups of warm water and applying that mixture with a sponge unto the appliance. Allow it to set for 10 minutes then rinse and dry thoroughly. For quick clean ups rub equal parts of water and household ammonia. Club soda is also another quick clean and it polishes at the same time.

Blender:
Fill your blender part way with hot water and add a drop of dish detergent. Cover and turn it on for a few seconds. Rinse, drain, and dry.

Breadboards/Cutting boards:
To rid your cutting board of onion, garlic, fish smell, or other strong odors cut a lime or lemon in two and rub it (cut side of the fruit) on the surface of the board.

Make a paste of baking soda and water and apply generously. Let set for a few minutes and then rinse thoroughly.

Broiler pan:
Sprinkle your broiler pan heavily with dry laundry detergent. Cover with a damp paper towel and let the burned food set for a while. The detergent will help to break down the burnt on food without the fumes of some oven cleaners and will require very little scouring when going to finish the cleaning job.

Can Opener:
Loosen grime build up on your can opener by brushing it with an old toothbrush dipped in dish soap. Rinse in hot water and then finish the cleaning job by running a paper towel through the cutting process.

Cast Iron Skillets:
You can clean the outside of your cast iron cookware with a commercial oven cleaner but do not allow it to set or penetrate on the cooking surface. After cooking with your cast iron pans, clean with warm soapy dish water, rinse and dry thoroughly. Take a piece of crumbled wax paper and rub the outside of the pan while the skittle is still warm to help prevent rusting. Wipe a thin layer of oil all over the cooking surface to help keep it seasoned.

Tarnished Copper:
Fill a spray bottle with vinegar and add three tablespoons of salt. Spray solution liberally on the copper pot, let stand for a while then simply rub clean.

Dip a lemon into salt and rub tarnished copper.

Rub with Worcestershire sauce or catsup. The tarnish will disappear.

Burnt and Scorched Pans:
Sprinkle burnt pots liberally with baking soda, adding just enough water to moisten. Let stand several hours. After setting, generally the burned portion will lift right out of the pan like magic!
Stubborn stains on non-stick cookware can be removed by boiling 2 tablespoons of baking soda, ½ cup vinegar, and 1 cup of water for 10 minutes. Re-season the pan with salad oil.

Always place a jar lid or marbles in the bottom part of your double broiler. The marbles or lid will start to make a rattling noise that will tell you when the water has been boiled out.

Casserole Dishes with Burnt on Food:
Easy peazy way to remove burnt on food in your casserole dishes is to fill it with boiling water and add 2 tablespoons of baking soda or salt. Allow to set for about an hour and it will pour right out.

Dishwasher Film:
Fill dishwasher as you normally would but without any silverware, aluminum, or brass. Put a bowl of 1 cup bleach and set at the bottom of your dishwasher. Run through the washing cycle but not the dry cycle. Remove the bowl and dump any liquid out. Refill with 1 cup of white vinegar and allow your dishwasher to run a complete cycle. This will remove any film your dishwasher may have as well as your glassware!

Drains and Garbage Disposals:
Lean your drain when clogged with grease with a mixture of one-cup salt and one-cup baking soda. Put mixture into the drain and pour a kettle of hot water down it. The grease will dissolve and your drain will open immediately.

Never dump coffee grounds down your drain!

To freshen your garbage disposal grind a half of a lemon or lime.

Grater:
Make clean up easy by rubbing your grater with salad oil before grating.

Use a toothbrush to remove lemon rind, cheese, onion or whatnot out of the grater before washing.

Oven:
Following a spill, sprinkle with salt immediately. When oven is cool, brush off burnt food and wipe with a damp sponge.

Sprinkle bottom of oven with automatic dishwashing soap and cover with wet towels. Let stand for a few hours and wipe the grime away.

To clean oven parts quickly, place a towel in the bathtub and pile all the removal parts. Over the removal parts with just enough hot water to cover the parts and add one cup of dishwasher soap over it. Let set for a couple hours. Rinse and allow to dry before replacing.

A cheap way to clean the inside of your oven is to turn it on at warm setting for 20 minutes, shut off. Place a small dish of full strength household ammonia on the top shelf and a large pan of boiling hot water on bottom shelf and allow it to sit overnight. In the morning open the oven and allow it to air out for a while before washing it out with soapy warm water. Even the worst baked on grease will wash away easy!

Refrigerator:
Keep your refrigerator smelling fresh by keeping an open box of baking soda in it. Replace monthly. Another quick trick is soaking a cotton ball in vanilla extract set in the refrigerator will also do the trick!

Prevent and rid of mildew by wiping it with white vinegar. The acid in vinegar effectively kills mildew fungus.

Sinks:
For a sparkling white sink place paper towels on the bottom of your sink and saturate with bleach. Allow to set for about ½ hour and rinse.

Rub stainless steel sinks with lighter fluid if rust marks appear. After the rust disappears, wipe with your regular kitchen cleaner.

Use a cloth dampened with rubbing alcohol to remove water stains from stainless steel.

Spots on stainless steel can also be removed with white vinegar.

Club soda works wonders at putting the shine back into your stainless steel.

Egg-cellant Tips and Hints for Eggs!

You have surely heard someone say or have said it yourself that someone can’t even boil water. Well if a person can’t boil water they may find it difficult to even make a hard boiled egg. Maybe it is even you. Well if you get the boiling water down pat, here is a couple tips on how to make the perfect hard boiled egg every time and some other helpful egg hints that will help you serve up a terrific egg breakfast to serve on your breakfast nook.

To boil the perfect hard boiled egg to serve to a loved on for breakfast in bed or a morning brunch, or even for preparing deviled eggs, place your eggs in a pan and cover with cold water. Add a tablespoon or two of white vinegar to the water (depending on how many eggs you are boiling), place on stove and bring to a boil. Let it boil for a good two minutes and then remove from the heat. Place lid on the pan and allow the eggs to set in the hot water for about 15 minutes. After sitting, drain off the hot water, crack the eggs slightly by rolling them around in your pan, and then cool with cold water. After cool enough to the touch to handle, peel the shell off your perfectly hard-boiled egg.

Egging for more tips and hints about eggs? You have come to the right spot. Here are some great tips that will turn you into an egg culinary artist!

  • Fresh or not Egg: To tell if a egg is fresh or not without having to break the shell, immerse the egg in a pan of cool salted water. If the egg sinks to the bottom, it is fresh. If it floats the top, it is old. Toss it. Fresh eggs also appear rough and chalky. Old eggs are smooth and shiny.

  • Hard Boiled or Fresh? We have all done it at one time or another (okay, well I have anyhow) placed a hard-boiled egg back into an egg carton with the intent of eating it later. However, when going to eat it you forget which one was the hard-boiled egg and which one was fresh. Well to keep from getting egg on your face take the suspected egg and spin it on your kitchen table. If it spins round and round, it is a hard-boiled egg. If it wobbles and will not create a spin, it is raw.

  • To keep egg white from emerging out of a crack while preparing hard-boiled eggs, add vinegar to your boil water. Vinegar will keep your eggs white in place! You can also pierce the end of an egg with a pin to keep it from breaking while preparing hard-boiled eggs.

  • Are your Poached Eggs getting the best of you? If you place a few drops of vinegar in your boil water, the vinegar will help keep the poached egg from running all over the pan.

  • Eggs will beat up fluffier if they are allowed to set out and reach room temp before beating.

  • Beaten egg whites will be more stable if you add 1 tsp cream of tartar to each cup of egg whites.

  • Approximately 7 to 8 eggs will produce one cup of egg whites.

  • Separate eggs whites quickly from the yolk by using a funnel. The egg whites will drop through the funnel and leave the yolk behind in tact.

  • Unless a recipe specifically calls for extra large eggs, it is best to use medium to large eggs. Extra large eggs may cause a cake to fall when cooking.

  • Brown or White Eggs? They are the same in everyway. No more needs to be said.

  • You can keep egg yolks fresh for several days in your refrigerator by placing them in a bowl of cold water covered.

  • You can freeze egg whites up to a year and you can refreeze defrosted egg white.

  • Achieve fluffier omelets by adding a pinch of cornstarch before beating.

With these helpful hints and tips you are ready to face the egg straight on and impress anyone with your skills. Check out some of the egg-cellant recipes in to impress anyone who dines at your table.
