Quick Tips to Give a Room a New Look

If your home is already adorned with beautiful Amish furniture, you have the hard part done and giving any room in your home a new look will cost hardly nothing! However, even with beautiful Amish furniture in your home, a rooms décor can become stale or boring after a while. When that happens, it doesn’t require buying more furniture to give it a new look, of course unless you need new furniture and then I suggest Amish furniture due to its longlivity, durability and beauty. All it really needs is a little change. A little change can make all the difference in the world.

One of the easiest ways is by simply moving your furniture around. Play with different set ups. Move a piece of furniture out of a room or bring a new piece of furniture in. By simple rearranging your furniture can give a room an entirely different feel and look.

If by merely moving your furniture around doesn’t quite cut it, consider changing up your lines, curtains, throw pillow. This can bring new color into a room giving it a completely new spice to life.

The focal point of interest in a room is important to the feel a room gives. Your focal point is where your eye is automatically drawn to when entering a room. If you have excessive furniture in a room or clutter, your focal point can be thrown off. It is kind of like when your children have their toys strewn throughout a room and all you see when you first walk in is the toys. Heck out what your focal point is in the room you want to refresh, and refresh your focal point. If the focal point is a signature Amish piece of furniture, add a vase with flowers or a picture frame, knick knack or whatnot to bring the eye a different view. You can even hang an interesting art piece on the wall behind the Amish piece.

You can change the lighting by simply switching out your table lamps or putting a fresh color shade on. Change the wall color, or add seasonal décor to give a room a fresh look. De-cluttering is the biggest help to any room in giving it a fresh look. You would be surprised just how much better a room can look by simply simplifying.

Hot Wall Paint Trends For 2010

The New Year has bought on many great new colors in decorating trends in home decorating. The new colors that are starting to show up on the walls of many homes are perfect compliments to Amish furniture.

Purple/Lavender has moved out of little girls rooms and is showing up in living and family rooms, especially the lavenders. The soft color of the lavender shades add a sense of luxury yet tranquility to any room, making it a perfect color for a room where you and your family relax together.

Pink is not a color many would think of using for a den or family room, but the many shades of pink that are available today will surprise you in how they bring a soft glow to any room. Many shades of pink that have a soft earthy undertone are perfect for dens, offices, and family rooms.

Greens are not new but still a hot trend for walls in 2010. With the “go green” campaign, more homes are finding various shades of green on their walls. Avoid the saturated hues of green such as the forest greens, emerald greens, and other deep shades of green. They are no longer in as far as home décor. Instead, use the soft tones of green with more of a yellow undertone then blue. All of these colors complement Amish furniture beautiful so it was nice to see the new trends in wall color for 2010.

Choosing a Wall Color to go with your Amish Furniture

Choosing the perfect wall color to go with your Amish furniture is really quite easy. The nice thing about Amish furniture is it can go with just about any color décor. Whether you are spiffing up a room in your home or decorating for a new home, choosing your wall color is not as stressful as you may think it is.

A safe bet is always neutral colors but not everyone wants a neutral color in their home. Some people like to incorporate bright vibrant colors that match their personalities. With Amish furniture, you can have it either way. For lighter shades of Amish furniture, if you don’t want them to fade into the background, go with deeper neutrals. Another option is using complementary colors. Use a color wheel and look at complementary colors that are opposite on the color wheel (e.g. red/green, blue/orange, yellow/purple). This is a bolder look, but if you have a bold personality, then you will be happy with the results.

Before painting, choose many paint color samples and hold them against your wall to help you get a feel for the colors. Tape them to your wall and live with them a few days to even get a better feel for it, and give others and opportunity to give their input. The great thing about paint is you can always paint over it if you do not like it. However, it is a lot of work so it is best if you just paint a small section of a wall if you are making drastic changes in color and living with it a few days before committing to it. This way it is less to cover if you decide the color was not delivering the feeling you looking for.

Quatersawn, Riftsawn, and Plainsawn Wood

In the previous blog I spoke about quatersawn wood, and have in a couple other blogs, so I thought now might be a good time to focus on what quarter sawn wood is and how it differs from other cuts of wood. There are three basic ways lumber can be cut into board – plainsawn, riftsawn, and quatersawn. I am going to use Wikipedia to help me explain the differences to you and the picture above from WiseGeek where you can read more about the differences. .

Quatersawn
Quarter sawing is a process of sawing logs into boards, a method that produces quartersawn and riftsawn boards. Quartersawn boards have two advantages: its stability against warping with changes in moisture and although shrinkage stills occurs, it is less troublesome.

The decorative effect, although this depends on the timber species. Quartersawn oak shows a prominent ray fleck. Quartersawn sapele is likely to produce a ribbon figure.
Rather than feeding a log into a mill for rift sawn and merely shifting the blade position a little after each board, the whole log must first be quartered (hence the name), then each quarter is sawn separately. The best quarter sawing pattern takes a single slice off each face of the quarter, rotating it between cuts. This is obviously a lengthy process, so a common compromise is to rift saw throughout each quarter, but at 45° to the faces.
Quartersawn boards can also be produced by other methods.

Plainsawing
Plainsawing is the most common and least expensive method of sawing. Plainsawn lumber is obtained by making the first saw cut down the length of the log and the remaining cuts parallel to the first. This method is the most economical because it provides the widest boards and results in the least amount of waste. Plainsawn lumber tends to contain more variation within and among boards, is less dimensionally stable tending to expand and contract more across the width of the boards than quartersawn lumber.

Riftsawn
Riftsawn is somewhere between plainsawn and quartersawn. The growth rings are roughly at a 30 to 45 degree angle to the face of the board. Riftsawn is more stable than plainsawn, but it does not exhibit the distinctive rays found in some quartersawn wood. Rift-sawing produces narrow boards with accentuated vertical or “straight” grain patterns and are often favored for fine furniture and other applications where matching grain is important. However due to the waste factor in the sawing procedure, riftsawn is very expensive and limited quantities and species.

Humidity and Amish Furniture

Ah, as much as summer is a welcomed season after a cold winter, with it comes humidity. With humidity come sticky tabletops and drawers even in your Amish furniture. Wood is hydroscopic, meaning it sucks up water from the base and draws it up to its very tops. The water it sucks up is either liquid water or water vapor (humidity). Therefore, you can say, wood is like a sponge and with that being said only goes to mean that your Amish furniture is a sponge as well.

Say you lived in a tropical climate and moved to a dryer lower moisture climate. When you arrive with your Amish furniture, you may notice a change in the way your drawers work. In the tropical climate, your Amish furniture adjusted to the climate if you did not have air conditioning controlling the climate in your home and the doors likely stuck due to the moisture it absorbed over time. When you arrive in a lower moisture climate, your furniture naturally adjusts to its new living condition and will release the extra moisture into the air. This release will cause the wood to shrink.

Wood naturally swells and shrinks the most around the growth rings of the tree. When crafting furniture, the Amish must account for this movement or the wood may crack. With their long history in furniture design, they have this mastered it for the most part, but cannot do anything about the environment in your home.

If you are purchasing a new piece of Amish furniture, give it a good week to become accustomed to its new environment. Monitor the humidity level in your home and keep it in the 35% to 45% range. Summer humidity can cause some tabletops to stick tight. When you get the table open, apply some wax on the dowel pins and slides and it should remedy the problem in the future.

If you live in a high moisture area and cannot control your humidity level yet want to purchase Amish furniture, look into purchasing Amish furniture built from quarter-sawn white oak. It is naturally resistant to water damage and the quarter-sawing places the growth rings nearly vertical. This causes the wood to “swell” nearly vertical and allows the wood to expand and contract lessening the chances of twisting, cupping, or cracking.

Amish Furniture and Furniture Polishes, Waxes, etc.

Allow me to put to rest all the campaigns you see on TV and in print in regards to furniture polishes, waxes, and cleaning products. Companies make promises to potential customers that their product will protect and replenish your furniture’s hardwood oils and feed the wood like it is screaming out to you that it is hungry, thirsty, even dehydrated. These are not only false promises, but when it comes to Amish furniture, it is just darn right not true! The fact of the matter is that Amish furniture does not need to be fed or watered, or any of that nonsense. There are no natural oils in the hardwood that is used to create Amish furniture, so there is no need to replenish something that isn’t there to replenish.

Most Amish furniture artisans use conversion varnish, which completely seals off the wood from the elements. When you follow up with your cleaning routine using waxes and polishes all they really do in reality is just sit on top of the varnish finish, never penetrating into the wood. Furniture polishes and waxes only add a temporary amount of protection until the polish evaporates generally anywhere from one hour to a day. They will not stop the sunlight from penetrating, it will not stop oxidation, it will not stop the drying out or cracking of finishes, it will not protect it from heat or solvents, and it will not protect it from physical abuse on your Amish furniture.

It will however add that temporary shine or luster to the surface that gives the appearance of clean, new, revived and many leave a nice scent behind. It will also help clean off those greasy fingerprints off the surface. Therefore, you may question, what should you use. Well that depends on what you are seeking. If you are looking for that long lasting shine, go with a paste wax. Some are scented, but don’t leave as much scent behind as a furniture polish. If you are looking for a quicker cleanup of dust and fingerprints, go with the furniture polish. Look for a polish that has a slower evaporation rate because even with the limited protection a polish provides, it doesn’t last long if it evaporates within an hour.

NOTE
When cleaning glass inserts, never spray glass cleaning product onto the glass. Spray it onto your cleaning rag first and then clean the glass.

Quick Tips for Maintaining your Amish Furniture

You bought your Amish furniture because you fell madly in love with the piece or pieces and you want to keep it around for generations to come to enjoy its pure beauty. In order to do that there are some things you will have to do to ensure its beauty remains. Here are some quick tips that will help you maintain your Amish furniture for generations:

It is important that when arranging your Amish furniture in your home, you do so with the consideration avoiding direct sunlight and heat from beating down on your furniture. If you have no other choice but to place it by a window or a heater vent, there are things you can do to divert the sun or heat source. Windows can have a shade put on it and have it pulled during the hours where the sun is the strongest. Heat vents can be covered with diverters to redirect the flow of the heat. Do not count on paste waxes and polishes to block the penetration of the sunlight.

  • Maintain your homes humidity in the 35% to 45% range.
  • Dust your Amish furniture with the grain.
  • Clean table with soap and water. Dry with a clean towel or rag.
  • Avoid polishes that contain silicones.
  • Use coasters, hot pads, and try to protect the finish from physical abuse.

Amish Furniture Mishaps Repairs

Distressed wood is attractive to many; however, when your Amish furniture becomes distressed through anything other than natural elements can make you cringe. Things like cigarette burns; heat marks from that hot skillet that was put on the table without a proper heat pad; nail polish that got hit by the ball flying through the air mysteriously; paint from that art project that no newspaper was put under; water marks from sweating glasses; wax from the dinner table centerpiece; or gum from the child that thought he might chew it later and stuck it under the table are all things that can hurt your Amish furniture. However, that is the great thing about Amish furniture. It is forgiving and those things can be repaired or fixed even by you. Here are the solutions to those common mishaps that can happen to your Amish furniture:

Cigarette burns:
Minor burns can be fixed by rubbing with a paste or linseed oil and rottenstone. You can get these items at your local hardware store. Work with the grain pattern while rubbing.

Heat Marks:
Rub with the grain with a dry steel wool soap pad, extra fine (grade 0000) steel wool or a cloth damp with mineral spirits. Work slow and rub soft.

Nail Polish:
Blot the spill immediately and then rub with fine steel wool (grade 0) dipped in guardsman furniture polish. Wipe dry.

Paint:
If fresh, remove latex paint with water. If the paint is oil based use mineral spirits.

Water Marks:
Rings are often in the wax, not the finish. Most of the high-end Amish dining tables are finished with conversion varnish. Rub with white toothpaste, mayonnaise, or salad oil and wipe dry.

Wax or gum:
Harden the spot by holding an ice cube wrapped in a cloth until hard. Pry off with your fingernail. Rub the area with extra fine (grade 0000) steel wool if needed. Use a bit of mineral spirits if needed. Wipe dry.

Red Oak in Amish Furniture

A lot of Amish made furniture is made from Red Oak partially due to its easy accessibility and partially due to its hardness. Red Oak can be found throughout the U.S. and Canada. It is the most widely used hardwood tree. With trees having the ability to reach 100 feet tall making it very versatile in application. It is often plain sawn giving it a beautiful grain pattern.

When you think of Red Oak, you may think it only comes from one particular tree rightly named the Red Oak, however, Red Oak wood can be obtained from various trees. The black Oak is one of them. Identifying factors of Red Oak wood is its reddish grain pattern and the wide, flowing ring patterns. The annual rings are black in color and are indented into the wood. When you run your hand across the black rings, it will feel a bit ridged. You can identify Amish Plain sawn cuts by looking at the end grain pattern of any board.

Accessorizing Your Dinning Room

Matching china cabinets and buffets in a wide range of styles and finishes adds the perfect complement to traditional, classic, or contemporary decor. Many Amish made china cabinets come in two sections with sturdy bases and glass front hutches to display a collection of fine china or stoneware. Due to their outstanding craftsmanship, beauty, and durability, high quality Amish made dining room furniture become fought over treasured heirlooms. Because of their function in the home, with many hours and memories made in the dinning room, Amish made dinning room furniture carries family traditions, stories, and a lot of love that everyone wants to treasure.

While Amish made furniture may be a bit more expensive than other furniture, most people consider the expense a worthwhile investment. Purchasing cheaper furniture made from veneers or compressed lumber may save money initially, but spending more for high-quality, durable hardwood is more cost effective in the long run. Over the years, poorly constructed veneers can scratch easily and will show wear and tear more quickly. Table legs become wobbly to where you are having to reinforce them to get any further use from them among other problems. By the time you replace a set of inexpensive dinning room furniture, you would have paid for a high quality set of Amish made dinning room furniture that has the potential of becoming a well loved and received family heirloom.

Authenticity of Amish Furniture

To own a piece of Amish furniture is to own a piece of time. Every piece of Amish furniture is a testament to the amount of hard work, artisanship, and time that went into producing it. Each single piece of Amish furniture that comes out of their workshops takes days to complete. Although certain feature will remain steady throughout a design category, no two are exactly alike. Originality is what adds to the charm of owning Amish furniture. The originality of Amish furniture is extremely important while looking to buy one. It is in part its proof of authenticity. With the Amish community now making it possible for anyone anywhere to own their beautiful artisanship through dealing with furniture retailers, a new market has cropped up; that with less than honorable intentions. When purchasing Amish furniture, make sue that the retailer you are dealing with only sells authentic Amish made furniture. An honest Amish Furniture retailer will be more than happy to share with you the source of which their furniture they sell originates. Don’t be afraid to ask if you are unsure of the authenticity of the furniture first. An honest retailer will be more than happy to disclose with you anything you need in order for you to be comfortable in making that first purchase of Amish furniture.
