Amish Furniture Making Technique

As it has been known throughout history, the Amish do not use electricity to create their many masterful pieces of furniture, however, many of the woodworking tools in Amish shops are powered by hydraulic and pneumatic power that are ran on diesel generators. However, this small allotted amount of power is used for major cuts for construction as the detail and finish work is all done by hand. There are still some Amish woodworkers who opt to use nothing but hand tools. With Amish furniture supporting a large part of the livelihoods of the Amish communities and the widespread demand of high quality Amish furniture, even with the small-allotted amount of power used, it is amazing how these craftsmen are able meet the demands and still have the high quality in each and every piece as they do.

  1. I wonder if they ever considered wind power as a generator so they could mass produce. Well maybe not in the same standing as a factory, but have the ability to put out more pieces than they currently are able to due to all the fine sanding etc.

  2. I re-did a piece of Amish furniture I had recieved from my grandmothers estate. Just doing the light sanding for that was a lot of work, little lone the staining. I can't imagine how long it would take to sand down a newly built piece of furniture!
