Egg-cellant Tips and Hints for Eggs!

You have surely heard someone say or have said it yourself that someone can’t even boil water. Well if a person can’t boil water they may find it difficult to even make a hard boiled egg. Maybe it is even you. Well if you get the boiling water down pat, here is a couple tips on how to make the perfect hard boiled egg every time and some other helpful egg hints that will help you serve up a terrific egg breakfast to serve on your breakfast nook.

To boil the perfect hard boiled egg to serve to a loved on for breakfast in bed or a morning brunch, or even for preparing deviled eggs, place your eggs in a pan and cover with cold water. Add a tablespoon or two of white vinegar to the water (depending on how many eggs you are boiling), place on stove and bring to a boil. Let it boil for a good two minutes and then remove from the heat. Place lid on the pan and allow the eggs to set in the hot water for about 15 minutes. After sitting, drain off the hot water, crack the eggs slightly by rolling them around in your pan, and then cool with cold water. After cool enough to the touch to handle, peel the shell off your perfectly hard-boiled egg.

Egging for more tips and hints about eggs? You have come to the right spot. Here are some great tips that will turn you into an egg culinary artist!

  • Fresh or not Egg: To tell if a egg is fresh or not without having to break the shell, immerse the egg in a pan of cool salted water. If the egg sinks to the bottom, it is fresh. If it floats the top, it is old. Toss it. Fresh eggs also appear rough and chalky. Old eggs are smooth and shiny.

  • Hard Boiled or Fresh? We have all done it at one time or another (okay, well I have anyhow) placed a hard-boiled egg back into an egg carton with the intent of eating it later. However, when going to eat it you forget which one was the hard-boiled egg and which one was fresh. Well to keep from getting egg on your face take the suspected egg and spin it on your kitchen table. If it spins round and round, it is a hard-boiled egg. If it wobbles and will not create a spin, it is raw.

  • To keep egg white from emerging out of a crack while preparing hard-boiled eggs, add vinegar to your boil water. Vinegar will keep your eggs white in place! You can also pierce the end of an egg with a pin to keep it from breaking while preparing hard-boiled eggs.

  • Are your Poached Eggs getting the best of you? If you place a few drops of vinegar in your boil water, the vinegar will help keep the poached egg from running all over the pan.

  • Eggs will beat up fluffier if they are allowed to set out and reach room temp before beating.

  • Beaten egg whites will be more stable if you add 1 tsp cream of tartar to each cup of egg whites.

  • Approximately 7 to 8 eggs will produce one cup of egg whites.

  • Separate eggs whites quickly from the yolk by using a funnel. The egg whites will drop through the funnel and leave the yolk behind in tact.

  • Unless a recipe specifically calls for extra large eggs, it is best to use medium to large eggs. Extra large eggs may cause a cake to fall when cooking.

  • Brown or White Eggs? They are the same in everyway. No more needs to be said.

  • You can keep egg yolks fresh for several days in your refrigerator by placing them in a bowl of cold water covered.

  • You can freeze egg whites up to a year and you can refreeze defrosted egg white.

  • Achieve fluffier omelets by adding a pinch of cornstarch before beating.

With these helpful hints and tips you are ready to face the egg straight on and impress anyone with your skills. Check out some of the egg-cellant recipes in to impress anyone who dines at your table.

  1. I can boil an egg with no problems. Actually, I'm a fairly acomplished cook and baker. My weakest point is the old table and chairs that are in my kitchen. It wasn't the best set to begin with and we've been using it for nearly 25 years. My husband told me we could look for a new one and I told him I had already found it. When I showed him the breakfast nook he gave me a big hug and asked me if I had ordered it yet. I hadn't, but I did immediately after that. Now, I can invite family and friends in for a meal and I'm proud of the way my kitchen looks. Thanks for all of the tidbits, I'll be trying them all.

  2. I ordered this breakfast nook a couple of days ago. I can't wait until it arrives. I love this site. You have so many wonderful ideas for decorating and helpful hints too. I try to read it on a daily basis but I know I've never missed an article yet. Keep up the great work.

  3. I always wondered about the white vs brown egg thing. Just another way to make more money, I should have known!%#* I like the breakfast nook but unfortunately there isn't anything wrong with the table and chairs I have. I do appreciate all of the helpful hints. I make it a point not only to keep them, but to share them with my friends.

  4. My daughter and her new new husband have just bought their first home. The kitchen/dining area is not very big and they really need a space saving dining set. Your breakfast nook would be a perfect addition to that room. They can add cushions now or later after they finish redecorating the house. I'm so excited, I can hardly wait for them to get home from work to have them look at the set. Thanks so much for making online shopping a possibility.

  5. We have a travel trailer and the dining area really needed an update. We were able to use this breakfast nook and it looks like it was made for it. It sure has dressed up the looks of our kitchen/dining area. We keep the bench stored away in a closet unless we need it, which isn't often.

  6. That's the first time I've heard about covering yolks with water. When I make an angel food cake I have 12 yolks and it takes me a while to use them all. I've been throwing them out when they get to dry. Thanks for the tip.
