Turn your Spare Room Into a Home Office/Guest Room

Many people are adding an office in their home and not always for work related purposes. Some people have found themselves going back to school after many years of being out of the traditional education scheme of things. Regardless if you need to add a home office space for continuing education, work, home finances, or just a place to call your own and use it for a multiple functioning purpose, you want it to be both attractive and efficient. But what if that same space you have set aside was the spare bedroom you used for the occasional guest that come to visit? Strategizing a functional, work efficient, yet a comfortable enough room to make overnight guest feel at ease can be a challenge.

Just as metal is cold to the touch, it is cold to an over all feeling of a room. Furnishing a home office/guest room with a metal desk, regardless of color will instantly make a room feel less inviting and more business oriented. Remember, the two major pieces of furniture will be the office desk and the bed in the room and the first things ones eye will be drawn to. It will set the entire mood to the room. By furnishing the room in wood furniture you will give a warm and comforting feel to it, yet get all the functionality and efficiency your desire.

It is far easier to accessories a room where its main furniture is done in wood rather than metal. Metal has its place in the world, and even in room furnishing, but is more suited to offices off set from ones home.

The size of your room will determine the exact type of wood furniture you will be able to accessories with. If the room is smaller, then a smaller wooden desk and a wooden bed would be a great place to start.

Accessorize further with a comfortable sitting chair with a side table for evening reading and an area you can fit with an entertainment center for space allotted.

Lighting can be somewhat trickier when sharing a space with a work center/guest bedroom. Although you want appropriate lighting for working, you do not want it so bright that a guest could not relax in the evening. Task lighting works well for this with the office section of the room having separate extra lighting that can be turned on when needed. A lamp is sufficient on a side table next to the comfortable chair for reading.

Keep wall color to mattes. Stark whites and bright colors although maybe more conducive to work is not conducive to relaxation and sleep for a guest. Stick with the more natural tones as they will compliment your wood furniture as well. Some shades of paint that work well in an office/guest room are the Macadamia and Moderate White by Sherwin William. You can go to any paint supplier though and get paint samples to get a feel for some colors before the paint ever hits the wall. Tape the samples up on your wall and live with them for a couple days before making a final decision. Take into consideration the color of the carpet, fabrics, and accessories in the space as well.

  1. I want the Executive Deluxe Secretary Desk for sure. There's a little alcove in my bedroom and this would fit neatly. The Shaker Hill Bed would look good in that room too. An office when I need it and a spare bedroom too. What a great idea.

  2. I recently spent a weekend with my cousin and I came away with the realization that I never wanted to paint a bedroom red, for any reason. The room I slept in was red and the small light from the alarm clock made the room come alive with light. I had to cover up my head to get to sleep. She recently bought an Amish made bed and it was very comfortable, but the walls were something else.

  3. The Cannonball bed and a stylish computer desk would be great additions to our spare bedroom. Right now it's full of boxes that we have yet to unpack from the move. There is a dresser in there and it would look great with that bed. I'll be getting the order in as soon as I get the rest of the boxes unpacked.

  4. I've been looking for a desk to put in the spare bedroom so I can work at home without using the kitchen table. The Executive Deluxe Secretary Desk will work perfectly. The top storage is an added bonus that I can put to good use. I love the initials engraved on the front to. I should have started my search here instead of coming here last. Next time, I'll know better.

  5. I want the Shaker Hill Bed to put into my room and then I could move mine into the spare bedroom. I hate to buy a new bed to put in a room that doesn't get used very often. In my room it would get used every night.
