The Grandville Chair

There is just something about tradition and when I look at the Grandville Chair, that is what I think of, that and old show like “Bonanza”, “The Walton’s”, and “Little House on the Prairie”. You may wonder why these particular shows come to mind when viewing the Grandville Chair; let me explain.

On Bonanza, the Cartwright family was often invited to attend dinner parties with other prominent families and when they did you would see them pull out these beautiful chairs that were always adorned with leather seats. Again, on the show “The Walton’s”, if you recall the Baldwin sisters, you may recall in their sitting room a very similar chair with arms that was also leather padded, and then on the show “Little House on the Prairie”, Mrs. Olson’s dinner table was adorned also with padded wooden chairs. Those were the days when furniture was built to last for generations. When a child moved away from the home, the family would pass along furniture to help the child get started. More times than not, that furniture was already heir loomed through the passing of another relative making it that much more special. Things were not mass-produced, rather made individually with great care and pride. The only way you can even come remotely close to such detail, love and craftsmanship in furniture today is through the purchase of Amish made furniture. So that is my stroll down memory lane... all brought on by a chair – the Grandville Chair, it couldn’t have been named better.

  1. You're right about the fact that they look like they are built to last a very long time. I looked at a dining room set recently and one of the chairs was falling apart on the show room floor. That's not much of a recommendation for the quality. The owner told me that it was a defect and that's why they used it as a display, like that was supposed to make me feel any better. It didn't!

  2. Who could forget the elegance of the Baldwin sister's home especially after the plain furnishings in the Walton's home. That's an era I could have lived in and been totally happy.

  3. These chairs remind me of the one's in an exclusive club that my grandma used to take me to for Brunch. I always got to dress up and it made me feel more grown up too. They even had cloth napkins. Only time in my life I ever used them!

  4. I bet those chairs are really comfortable. I need to replace the chairs in the dining room. I really think the ones with the arm rests would look great with my table.
