Wood Characteristics ~ Cupping

When purchasing Amish furniture, in order to prolong its beauty, one should take a few precautions. Limiting the amount of exposure to sunlight, wet and cold temperatures, and hot conditions will keep your Amish furniture looking like new for many generations. When your Amish furniture is exposed to such elements, often found when storing furniture improperly, you may encounter cupping. Cupping is referred to when a boards edges start to curl up or down relative to the center of the board. This is caused by an imbalance of moisture in the wood.

Amish artisans take steps to prevent this problem by gluing boards with the grain patters going opposite directions. They also seal the top AND the bottom of the boards. This limits the amount of moisture that can penetrate the wood. However, with all the precautions the Amish furniture artisans take in preventing cupping, it is important that you as well take the necessary precautions to keep your furniture safe from excessive or prolonged moisture. When storing Amish furniture, find a climate controlled storage facility if at all possible or take measures to make sure that the storage area remains dry and that your furniture is not exposed to harmful elements.

  1. I've always wanted a roll top desk and this one is so much prettier than any other one I've ever seen. All that drawer space is awesome and I have just the spot picked out for it to sit.

  2. Wow, that is some awsome desk. I've been sitting here looking at it thinking about what I would put in each drawer and nook. I've even taken measurements to see if it would fit in the same space as my work table. It does, YEAH! Now I just have to talk to my banker wife and see if she will approve the expenditure.

  3. If I could have designed a roll top desk with all of the features I want, I would be looking at something very similar to the Classic Single Pedestal Rolltop. My birthday is coming up next month and I haven't bought myself anything since Christmas. I'm sure I deserve to have this and I know it will be put to good use. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

  4. My Dad's been looking for a new desk for his home office. I'm betting he will totalling love this one. I just sent him an e-mail with the link so he can have a look/see. I'm betting he'll have it ordered before he leaves work today.

  5. I would so love to have this desk. I use the kitchen table for a desk and have to pick up my work when it's meal time and put it back after I get everything cleaned up. I've been meaning to look for a desk, but I'm always too busy. I never thought of looking on line.
