Wood Types ~ Soft Maple

Soft Maple comes from maple trees belonging to the binomial name Acer Rubrum. The genus Acer, species rubrum are native to Eastern North America and the official state tree of Rhode Island. The color of soft maple Amish Furniture is somewhat different, although slight, from hard maple. Soft maple is still blondish creamy white with a slight tan color yet more tan in hue than hard maple. The grain and texture of soft maple is the same as hard maple, but soft maple is much lighter in weight than hard maple. Hard maple scores 950 lbf (pounds-force) on the Janka Hardness scale making it just as durable as Cherry.

Amish artisans often use soft or brown maple as many Amish refer to it, for paint grade pieces. This wood is about 25% softer than hard maple. Amish furniture artisans are using brown maple in their solid wood furniture. Amish artisans are using current stain techniques to give the wood a different look. One popular color of stain is "Expresso". This stain gives a very dark, rich color to the wood and it is lower in cost than cherry.

  1. I really like the lighter color of this wood. It's not common today. Everyone is carrying the darker woods. Even the light oak is scarce. It's good to know that I can come here and get exactly what I'm looking for in color and style.

  2. I really like the shape of this chair. I don't care so much about the color but it looks like it would give some pretty good lower back support. I'd definitely want arms, and I see that is available. My table is still in good shape but the chairs are needing to be replaced.

  3. I was impressed to see that this chair is available as a bar stool. I just bought a bar for the rec room but I didn't buy the chairs because I didn't see any that I really liked. These, I like a lot.
